Exercise Intelligence tip #1

February 12th, 2008 by Dawn

Exercising within proper postural alignment is super important. Many of the injuries that occur while working out are due to improper alignment of our bodies when performing strength training exercises.
To name a few:
-weight in the wrong part of the foot
-tightened traps
-loose core
-head and neck not in neutral position
-arched or dipped back
-rounded shoulders
-curled wrists

Make sure to have your workout partner or trainer keep close eye on your posture when doing a new exercise or multi-jointed exercise to ensure preventing an injury.

Better Body with BodyWalk

February 6th, 2008 by Dawn

What is it? It’s not just a walk, or just a run, it’s not a boot camp, or just a play in the park…it’s a little of everything! This past Sunday at BodyWalk we focussed on glutes and abs, and I mean all your abs! Within our 2.75 mile walk…ok there was one bear crawl up a hill, we accomplished:
*standing abdominal work targeting upper, lower, and obliques
*laying down core work
*4 variations of lunges
*6 upper body exercises
*bench and stair work
*lots of laughs
Our group of young professionals meets rain or shine, and even when it snowing! Every week we go a different route, with a different group of exercises, that get not only your major muscles, but also your synergist muscles (smaller assisting muscles), you know the ones you never knew you had! ;)
Come try it out anytime, the first class is on me.

Sundays, 10am at Discovery Park, Seattle. Meet in South Parking lot.

Why should I stretch, really?

February 5th, 2008 by Dawn

There are so many benefits of daily stretching. For one, it helps us keep a healthy range of motion in our daily movements. How many times are we doing a normal daily activity and ‘pull’ something? Stretching is useful for both injury prevention and injury treatment. Stretching is also thought to improve recovery and may enhance athletic performance. Additionally, increased flexibility of the neck, shoulders, and upper back may improve respiratory function. Ok, so you still ask, why should I stretch - because I said so!….just kidding. It just feels so good!

It is very important to develop and maintain a stretching regimen because working out tightens muscles. You don’t have to be lifting super heavy weights in order to experience the tightening effects of exercise. When you weight train, you incur tiny tears in your muscles. During the course of 24-73 hours, your body works at repairing those muscle tears, resulting in muscles that are a bit larger, stronger and tighter. Incorporating stretching into your daily habits will help Read More »
