Itscallops-sauce-ck-554704-l.jpg seems that every time we turn on the television or open the newspaper, there is another report about the health challenges facing Americans.

It is difficult to say no to that piece of office candy, or choose salad rather than fries with that sandwich at lunch. But, you know there are ways that you can cook and eat healthier which only require a little bit of sacrifice! …especially this time of year.

What is the Fat Burning Zone?

January 25th, 2008 by Dawn

You’ve heard it before, but what does it really mean. In simple terms, when you exercise anaerobically (without oxygen present - weight training), you are burning primarily carbohydrates for energy. When exercising aerobically (in the presence of oxygen - walking or light jogging) you are burning primarily fat for energy.
There are 3 zones of training:
Zone 1= aerobic, 65-75% of heart rate max, walking or jogging (Fat Burning Zone)
Zone 2= aerobic/anaerobic, 80-85% heart rate max, group exercise class
Zone 3= anaerobic, 86-90% of heart rate max, sprinting, lifting weights

Healthy Downtown Eats

January 17th, 2008 by Dawn

I invite all you healthy minded people to give your 2 cents on finding healthy food to eat for lunch downtown Seattle. I know it is a challenge to eat healthy when ordering out, but many of our choices can fit into a healthy meal plan. For instance a client of mine recently introduced me to Red Bowls, on 3rd&Columbia. The ‘Good Heart’ is delicious if you are looking for a vegetarian option, and the ‘Radical’ is great if your in the mood or some sushi. Want a salad, try Cocoa Banana salad bar on 2nd & James, or Market Fresh on 4th & Marion (just stay away from the hot foods side).  Please comment with your healthy favorites!

Ab- Plus Class

January 9th, 2008 by Dawn

Come work your whole core in just 30 minutes at The Exercise Space! A different group of exercises each week will constantly challenge you to get, and keep, overall functional strength in your core. Many people only train their abs and lower back when made to do so, like during a training session… I won’t mention any names ;)

Our core is our center of gravity and where all of our movement begins. An efficient core is necessary for maintaining proper muscle balance and preventing possible injuries. A weak core can make you susceptible to poor posture, lower back pain and muscle injuries. This can occur due to neglect of working all core musculature, either together or as individual units, creating imbalances within the core. When you have good core stability, the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen work in harmony and provide support to your spine for just about any activity…like earning a great six pack!

Now’s your chance to get your homework done!

Each class is limited to 4 people.
